If your AC quit on a 92-degree Miami afternoon, the first question is always the same: what is this going to cost me? It’s a fair question, and most HVAC companies won’t answer it until they’re standing in your living room. Here’s an honest look at what drives the price of an AC repair in South Florida, so you know what you’re walking into before anyone picks up a wrench.
The short answer
Most common residential AC repairs in the Miami area land somewhere between $150 and $650. Small fixes like a failed capacitor, a clogged drain line, or a contactor sit at the low end. Bigger jobs like refrigerant leak repairs or blower motor replacements sit at the high end. A handful of repairs, like a failed compressor on an older unit, can run $1,200 to $2,500 or more. That is usually the point where it’s worth comparing repair vs. replacement.
Those are ballpark figures, not a quote. Every unit, every failure, and every house is different, which is exactly why we give free quotes before any work starts.
The repairs we see most in South Florida
Clogged condensate drain lines
Miami humidity means your AC pulls gallons of water out of the air every day. When the drain line clogs (and here, it will) the unit shuts off or leaks water into the ceiling. One of the cheapest fixes on this list, and one of the most common calls we get. (Regular AC maintenance prevents this.)
Capacitors and contactors
Heat kills these small electrical parts, and South Florida units run nearly year-round. Symptoms: the unit hums but won’t start, or the outdoor fan won’t spin. Quick, inexpensive repair when caught early.
Refrigerant leaks
If your AC runs constantly but the house never cools, or the lines are icing up, you may be low on refrigerant. The fix isn’t just a top-off. A licensed tech has to find and repair the leak, or you’ll be paying for refrigerant again next summer.
Blower motors and fan motors
Salt air near the coast is hard on motors. Mid-range repair, very fixable.
Compressors
The big one. On a unit under 10 years old, often worth repairing (and sometimes still under manufacturer warranty). On an older unit, we’ll give you the honest math on repair vs. replace, in writing, with no pressure.
What actually drives the price
The age and brand of your unit, whether parts are under warranty, how accessible the equipment is (attic air handlers cost more in labor than garage units), the refrigerant type, and, bluntly, who you call. Unlicensed handymen quote cheap and cost you double when the fix fails or voids your warranty. A Kool Saver is a state-licensed Florida mechanical contractor, and every repair is done to code.
Three ways Miami homeowners overpay
- Paying the “emergency” markup for a non-emergency. A clogged drain at 9 pm can usually wait until 8 am. We’ll tell you on the phone whether it can.
- Approving a repair with no written quote. If the price appears after the work is done, it’s always higher. Get it in writing first. Ours are free.
- Skipping the $0 fix: maintenance. More than half the repair calls we run started as a problem that a seasonal tune-up would have caught early, which is far cheaper than any repair on this page.
