Common AC problems we fix in South Florida

Most repair calls in Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach come down to a short list of failures, and almost all of them get worse the longer the system keeps running. If you recognize any of these, it is time to call.

  • AC running but the house will not cool. Usually low refrigerant from a leak, a failing capacitor, or a dirty coil. In older homes it is often leaky ductwork sending cold air into the attic.
  • Ice on the copper lines or the indoor coil. Airflow or refrigerant problem. Shut the system off and call before the compressor is damaged.
  • Water on the floor by the air handler. Almost always a clogged condensate drain line. One of the most common calls we get and one of the fastest to fix.
  • AC turning on and off every few minutes. Short cycling. Can be a thermostat, a capacitor, a refrigerant charge issue, or an oversized system.
  • Weak airflow at the vents. Blocked filter, failing blower motor, or crushed or disconnected ducts.
  • AC will not turn on at all. Tripped breaker, failed capacitor or contactor, or a thermostat fault. We check the whole electrical chain, not just the thermostat.
  • Grinding, buzzing, hissing, or banging. Each sound points to a specific part. Banging and electrical buzzing mean shut it off and call today.

What happens on an AC repair visit

Every call starts with a full diagnostic, not a guess from the driveway. The technician checks refrigerant charge, electrical components, airflow, the condensate drain, and the condition of the ductwork, then gives you a written quote before any work begins. You approve the price, we do the repair, and we verify the system is holding temperature and cycling correctly before we leave. Repairs are done to Florida code by a state licensed mechanical contractor, with the parts and workmanship documented on your invoice.

What affects the cost of an AC repair

The two biggest factors are the part that failed and the refrigerant your system uses. A capacitor or contactor is a quick, inexpensive fix. A compressor or an evaporator coil is a major repair. Systems running the older R22 refrigerant cost more to recharge every year as supply shrinks, which is why we are honest when a repair on an aging R22 unit stops making sense. Age of the system, warranty coverage on parts, and how hard the equipment is to access all play a part. We quote in writing before work starts so there are no surprises. For a deeper breakdown, read our guide on what AC repair costs in Miami.

Repair or replace?

As a rule of thumb, if the repair costs more than about a third of a new system and the unit is past ten years old, replacement is usually the better long term value in our climate. Anything younger, especially with a clean maintenance history, is usually worth fixing. South Florida systems run ten or more months a year, so they age faster than the national averages suggest. We will tell you which side of that line your system is on, and if it is time for a new one, our AC installation and replacement page explains what a proper install includes. Our article on repair versus replace walks through the math.

AC repair across Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach

We run local dispatch for each county so the technician is not crossing three counties to reach you. Miami-Dade calls go to 305-403-8556, including Doral, Hialeah, Kendall, and Miami Lakes. Broward calls go to 954-294-8584, covering Fort Lauderdale, Pembroke Pines, Weston, and Plantation. Palm Beach calls go to 561-310-6968, covering West Palm Beach, Boca Raton, Wellington, and Royal Palm Beach. Same week appointments are available for most repairs.

Why homeowners call A Kool Saver

We have been fixing air conditioners in Miami since 2008 as a family owned, state licensed Florida mechanical contractor. Over 200 Google reviews and a 4.9 star rating come from doing the simple things right: showing up when we say we will, quoting in writing, and fixing the actual problem instead of the symptom. If your system also needs maintenance, ductwork, or insulation to stop the problem coming back, the same crew handles it.

Frequently Asked

AC Repair FAQ

How quickly can you get to my house for an AC repair?
We offer same-day service whenever possible across Miami-Dade, Broward, Palm Beach, and Martin. Book online and you’ll see the next available slot in real time — most repair calls go out the same day or next morning. Call the regional number closest to you for urgent dispatch.
Do you charge a diagnostic fee?
Estimates are free. A full system diagnostic — manifold gauges, electrical testing, refrigerant pressures, airflow check — has a standard service-call fee that gets waived when you approve the repair. You’ll know the cost before any work starts. No surprises.
Will you try to repair my unit before recommending replacement?
Yes. We’re a repair-first shop. Most issues — capacitors, contactors, refrigerant, thermostats, fan motors — are straightforward fixes that buy you years of additional life on the existing unit. We only recommend replacement when the math actually works out in your favor, and we’ll show you the numbers.
